Magic has always existed among humans, though in secret. Aspen Falls Academy is an institution which houses magical teenagers who would normally be in high school, teaching a magical curriculum. Its purpose, however, is to emphasize control of magic over recreation. These students are trained to be integrated with the rest of human society.
Recently, however, more students have been flooding into the school thanks to a group called the Interlopers. This group has the ability to perform rituals on unsuspecting humans, thus "marking" them and giving them magical abilities. Many believe the Interlopers are trying to build an army of sorts to take over humankind, but the fact remains that these Marked are confused and sometimes scared. For the past ten years, Aspen Falls has been taking these teenagers under its wing, though not everyone welcomes the change. Those naturally born with magic-- the Borne-- make things very difficult for the Marked.
